All the series in the Chicago universe for you to watch
In mid-2012, the NBC television network launched the drama series Chicago Fire, whose premise is to follow the daily lives of Windy City firefighters. The show soon became a huge hit with audiences and was renewed season after season, as well as spawning several spin-offs.
Throughout the episodes, various crossovers have been made between the spin-off series, and although not all of them have achieved the same success as the original plot, the franchise is still going strong and has a legion of fans and viewers.
Considering the number of chapters in each series, figuring out the story’s chronological order is not such an easy mission. However, the best way for those who want to start immersing themselves in the Chicago universe is to watch each production in the order in which it was released.
Here’s a list, in order, of the series derived from Chicago Fire.
Chicago Fire
Launched in 2012, the series was created by producer Dick Wolf. The plot is set in the 51st Battalion of the Fire Department, located in Chicago, and closely follows the intense and challenging work of the professionals who risk their lives every day to save people.
As well as highlighting the profession of firefighters, paramedics, and rescue teams, Chicago Fire also explores personal and team relationships and the complexity that comes with such hard work.
The main cast includes Jesse Spencer, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, Lauren German, Charlie Barnett, David Eigenberg, Teri Reeves, Eamonn Walker and Yuri Sardarov.
The twelfth season of Chicago Fire will be released in 2024. So far, the first nine seasons can be watched on Amazon Prime Video.
Chicago P.D.
When Chicago Fire was still in its second season, the spin-off Chicago P.D. was launched. The plot follows the Chicago Police Department’s Intelligence Unit, which is led by Sergeant Hank Vought (Jason Beghe).
The cases covered in the series are diverse and include topics such as drug trafficking, high-profile murders, organized crime, and very serious crimes.
As well as having a direct link with Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. also has a direct crossover with the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The main cast includes Jason Beghe, Jon Seda, Sophia Bush, Jesse Lee Soffer, Patrick John Flueger, Marina Squerciati, LaRoyce Hawkins, Archie Kao, and Elias Koteas.

Chicago Med
Launched in 2015, the third series in the Chicago universe to be produced was Chicago Med, which has a plot more focused on medical drama, very similar to what we see in the acclaimed Grey’s Anatomy.
Chicago Med follows the emergency department doctors and nurses who work at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as they deal with challenging cases and try to balance their dysfunctional love lives.
The tip for a good marathon in chronological order of the franchise’s events is to start watching the first season of Chicago Med together with the fourth season of Chicago Fire and the third season of Chicago P.D.
The main cast includes Nick Gehlfuss, Yaya DaCosta, Torrey DeVitto, Norma Kuhling, Colin Donnell, Brian Tee, S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, Marlyne Barrett, Rachel DiPillo and Luke Mitchell.
The ninth season of Chicago Medis is scheduled for release in 2024. Until then, you can check out the first six parts of the series in the Amazon Prime Video catalog.
Chicago Justice
Launched in 2017, Chicago Justice was the last series in the universe to be released, but it didn’t last long and only aired for one season.
The premise of the plot was to follow the Public Prosecutor’s Office, as prosecutors and investigators spend their days seeking justice. The story is somewhat similar to that of Chicago P.D., and perhaps that’s the reason for its brevity.
Thinking about the order of events, it’s interesting to watch Chicago Justice together with the sixth season of Chicago Fire, the fifth season of Chicago P.D., and the second season of Chicago Med.
The main cast is made up of Philip Winchester as Assistant State’s Attorney Peter Stone, Jon Seda as Chief Investigator Antonio Dawson, Joelle Carter as Investigator Laura Nagel, Monica Barbaro as Assistant State’s Attorney Anna Valdez and Carl Weathers as County State’s Attorney.

In addition to the crossovers in the Chicago universe, the Law & Order: Special Victims is also an important element when it comes to the chronology of the stories. For long marathon enthusiasts, it’s worth remembering that the crossover episodes should be watched after having already seen the indicated parts of each series.
