Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman form an unforgettable partnership

It’s no news that Marvel had to change course after the end of the Avengers: Endgame saga. With most of its main actors out of the picture, the studio had to reinvent itself. Some productions worked, others not so well. But Deadpool and Wolverine prove that it is possible to innovate and please its most loyal audience.

With an adult rating, the Deadpool franchise has always distanced itself from the studio’s other feature films. The “non-standard” hero, played by Ryan Reynolds, who isn’t afraid to speak his mind to the public (and let’s thank the breaking of the fourth part for that) or kill his enemies with exquisite cruelty has received positive reviews throughout his journey. With the purchase of Fox Century by Disney, the third film in the saga had an uncertain fate, until Hugh Jackman agreed to come out of retirement and revive his most iconic role: the mutant Wolverine.

But make no mistake. We won’t be seeing the hero of Logan (2017 film), who gave his life to save a group of mutant children. After his death, Wade Wilson learns from the TVA (yes, Loki’s time agents) that his Earth is doomed to end. The anti-hero then decides to search the multiverse for an alternative version of the X-Men. Only he finds a Wolverine condemned by the decisions of his past.

Together, they start a riot within the TVA, which leads both characters to the Void. And that’s where much of the story unfolds. Until they become allies, the two characters fight, mutilate each other, and swear at each other several times. That’s the beauty of putting two immortal heroes on the silver screen. It is also in exile that they meet a new villain from the comics: Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), who shares the same psychic powers as her twin brother, Professor Xavier.

The Void, as we know from Loki, is where unwanted variants are sent, which somehow alter the sacred timeline. So the audience is surprised by some special appearances – and we’ll only tell you the names that have already been announced here, without spoilers. We see Aaron Stanford as the mutant Pyro, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Dafne Keen as X-23. There’s also the presence of one of the Avengers (though not in the way you might imagine), a classic Marvel character, and an important name from DC. Not to mention numerous versions of Deadpool, such as Ladypool (who is not Taylor Swift!) and Dogpool (or Peggy, the dog voted Britain’s ugliest).

All in all, Deadpool and Wolverine is a journey of redemption and second chances. Wade has the opportunity to prove himself and act like the hero he dreamed of being. And, of course, to save his world from destruction. Wolverine, on the other hand, has to deal with the past, with the loss of his fellow X-Men, and with a fact that could just change his future. It’s also Marvel at its best: no complex, interconnected plots, no filter, and no fear of criticizing its biggest flaws.

The cast also includes familiar names: Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

And will we see Deadpool and Wolverine together again? It’s no news to anyone that the studio is preparing its newest venture, Multiversal Wars. The comic book saga aims to bring back popular names from the comics, such as Tony Stark and the Black Widow, in alternative versions, to fight for the existence and safety of the entire multiverse. The movie leaves the door open for both characters to appear, although the third Deadpool movie already serves as a conclusion. As Ryan jokes with Hugh during the movie, he’ll probably play Wolverine until he’s 90. The future will tell!
