Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey are the new additions to the cast

Dexter is coming back to TV, but not in the way you might think. A prequel series is being developed by Showtime. It promises to explore the origins of one of television’s most iconic characters.

The man chosen to play the serial killer is Patrick Gibson, known for his work on Shadow and Bone and The OA. Dexter: Original Sin consists of 10 episodes and features Gibson taking over the role originally played by Michael C. Hall.

In addition to Gibson, the series will feature Christian Slater, famous for his role in Mr. Robot, as Dexter’s adoptive father, homicide detective Harry Morgan, a role played by James Remar in the original series. Molly Brown, from Billions, will play Debra Morgan, Dexter’s sister, played by Jennifer Carpenter.

It was also announced that Patrick Dempsey (known for Grey’s Anatomy) will be a series regular. The actor will play Aaron Spencer, a Captain in the Miami Metro Homicide Police who has a long-term relationship with Harry Morgan (Slater’s character).

The beginning of the character’s journey

Set in Miami in 1991, Dexter: Original Sin takes place 15 years before the original series. According to the official synopsis, the series follows the character as he transitions from a student to a vengeful serial killer. When his bloodthirsty becomes uncontrollable, he must learn to channel his inner darkness.

With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him identify and eliminate people who deserve to be removed from society, without attracting the attention of the authorities. This challenge is particularly intense for young Dexter, who begins an internship in forensics at the Miami Police Department.

Revival

The original production aired from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime, receiving four Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series. Michael C. Hall, meanwhile, received five nominations for Best Actor in a Drama Series. After eight successful seasons, the story continued with the limited series Dexter: New Blood, which premiered in 2021.

The plot is set in the present day, ten years after the end of the original show. The actor asked for the time jump so the audience wouldn’t see it as a direct continuation, as if it were a new season.

Dexter now lives in a small town called Iron Lake. He goes by the name of Jim Lindsay, or Jimbo. There, he is well-known by the locals and seems to be friends with everyone. He works in a store that stocks very sharp weapons and knives but seems to cope very well with his killer instinct.

Clyde Phillips, showrunner of the original production, takes over as executive producer of Dexter: Original Sin, ensuring the continuity of the vision that made the series a phenomenon.
